Weekend Update

I think we need to play all of our games at 3pm with the curtains down… I mean outscoring opponents 18-4 is one thing, but doing it in two games is an entirely different beast all together. It might come as a surprise to some fans, but the “barnburner” games, while free of stress, are usually pretty tough to play in and aren’t all the exciting for us. A game that is over by the halfway point takes a lot more mental determination then a game that’s down to the wire. I realize that might not make sense, but try and look at it from out perspective.

It’s kind of funny because I think the opposite happens for me during the summer. A lot of times I’ll find myself playing some kinda stress free game like volleyball or ball hockey where it’s a mean nothing non-competitive game. Then I’ll get to the point where my competitive side starts to take over and the whole thing goes spiraling down. And by spiraling down I mean it gets heated. I wouldn’t suggest playing on my summer volleyball team unless you know how to throw down.

What’s Wrong With Movies: The Grey

There’s an excellent chance that Liam Neeson could make a record of himself reading the telephone book and it would make millions…millions. A quick look into his IMDB profile and you’ll notice he takes roles almost exclusively based on the fact that he comes out looking like the biggest badass on television. He’s played a god, a jedi, an immortal supervillan, a colonel, an admiral, and a captain, twice played a doctor, and voiced a lion on a number of occasions. He is the father figure’s father figure. So just for context, let’s examine the evidence.

So when I heard he was flying up to middle of nowhere, British Columbia to fight wolves, I jumped at the chance. This is “The Grey”

A heart-warming tale of a man’s struggle to teach inner-city wolves how to succeed. Also, how to brutally murder plane crash survivors. It does a great job of showing the bleak desperation that would set in from the severe circumstances. Figuring out where to find food, how to keep a fire, the preciously finite amount of resources, etc. The pristine scenery contrasted by the ever present threat of death fosters a unique feeling throughout the entire film. As Liam Neeson slowly lets the wolves even the score by killing the remaining actors, it’s pretty clear that the whole process isn’t going as fast as he’d like. That crazy shot at the end where he has broken glass bottles and a knife taped to his hands. That actually happens. Might be one of the most innovative/effective weaponry uses since the final fight scene of where Jason Statham uses the footpedals of a bike to take out like ten guys. Either way, I think the movie had the ability to keep the audience engaged and intrigued up until the final moments. Liam Neeson does a great job of being a badass and the BC wilderness as a background makes for a couple nice panoramic shots.

Facebook, it was the shining beacon of virtual community. A resource who’s only limit is only the number of human beings on the face of the Earth. Coupled with the unlimited amounts of information available to those who seek it, Facebook has become a deadly mix of addiction and evolution. Boiled down, Facebook’s goal is to connect people, boiled down that is. It’s swiftly becoming another cesspool of attention seeking web-surfers. It’s a small minority of users, but it takes one spoon to stir a pot. Now, I’ve been growing up with Facebook and a quick search can bring up an entire history of my life through various status updates, pictures, and even the rare video. It’s all there, a convenient auto-biography of everyone’s past few years. But unless you want to see Facebook go the way of Myspace, it’s got to stop.

What Has to Stop?

Facebook is, or at least I perceive it to be, the most efficient way to connect with my friends. It’s not a medium by which you can post your passive-aggressive grievances to initiate a flame war on everyone’s news feed (that’s what blogs are for.) Does it boil down to cowardice? Possibly, that thought just popped up, sounded relevant. I won’t call out names out of respect, but it has to stop. I’ve literally stopped reading comment sections on articles and videos because the chances of stumbling into… well, let’s just say I wish Liam Neeson perused the internet and jumped out at the most convenient times.

I’ve tried to take a stand against it, there’s been a few times where I’ve gotten near giddy with the number of notifications waiting for me. Only to sink into depression when it’s 15 different comments on a picture I’ve “liked.” In my mind, it’s a clear cry for attention, drawing in innocent onlookers. Maybe it’s just that it goes against how I like to do things.

So, concerned citizens of the internet, the responsibility is now in all of our hands. All of your friends posting statuses about how “People should just GROW UP!!!” or ”Uhmm, wow, Its sooo cool when someone who is SUPPOSED to be ur friend talks about u behind ur back. Say it to my face or u can get out of my life!!!” needed to be stopped. Step in, inform them that passive-aggressivism won’t get them anywhere in life, and suggest that they face their problems head on.

What’s Wrong With Movies: Chronicle

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Chronicle.

For those of you too lazy to watch the trailer, I’ll summarize it for you. A small, ethnically diverse, group of teens discover they are developing strange telekinetic powers (a clear metaphor for puberty) after a bizarre run-in with an alien artifact. They then proceed to make an ill-fated attempt at solving the world’s crime problems with their new found abilities by terrifying innocent children and steering rednecks off of cliffs. One summer, a particular member of the group “develops” a bit faster than the rest and decides to use their abilities for their own personal gain. The police are involved, nobody leaves happy (and they killed off the ethnic diversity half way through, racists.)

That being said, I think the movie made good use of an original plot. What would the first few weeks of discovering new powers be like. I could only imagine the various sitcom-like shenanigans I’d pull if I had the ability to move things with my mind. For example, one of the characters erected a lego model of the Seattle Space Needle with only a series of wrist flicks and crooked grins. It was a prime example of the mix of awe and curiosity that would inevitably surround the entire situation.

The movie also showed the perfect application of the Star Wars-esque method of “identifying the amount of evil in a character by the darkness of the bags under their eyes.” For example.

That being said, due to an unnatural rising action speed and an overuse of superhero movie cliches, this movie gets 6.5-7/10

Dry Spell of Writable Subjects

As many of you’ve probably realized, my writing cycle goes a lot like this. I have nothing to write about, someone cuts me off in traffic etc, I have something to write about, rinse, repeat. The problem with this is that it’s a dependent cycle. Without the stage preceding it, the process can’t carry on. So, as fate would have it, not much has happened that has given me the “write this publicly” vibe. Admittedly, lots of stuff has occurred. I’ve played a smattering of games over the last little while, I even got the chance to go see O|A|R in concert one night, my parents came to town this weekend. And while all of those things truly deserve mention, it’s not easy to develop a hook around.

So, if for the next few weeks I’m going to try and upload something every day, regardless of size, but I’ll try and keep it quality. Maybe I’ll go get into situations, like The Clash.
